I want to take my new (and fantastic) bf to dinner for his birthday. I want to go somewhere in Newport so that we can go eat cheesecake at the beach afterward. What's a cool place to go to? I would prefer to eat seafood, but anything is cool. I'd rather not do Mexican and sushi, though. Any ideas would be helpful.
Joe's is very fun, i wouldnt say romantic however. Theres a couple nice places at fashion island, or, if you want to go with fun and inexpensive, theres ruby's laguna beach, right nearly on the water, so you coup hop across to the beach and have desert. let me know if you need any more advice
Joes Crab Shack sucks. If you want crab, stick to Crab Cooker, or go up PCH a bit to the Crab Pot in the Alamitos Marina... that's fun. All your food dumped out on your table.
21 Oceanfront, The Cannery and Kantina on the peninsula. Kantina is VERY cool. Chart House and Villa Nova on PCH. Tutto Mare, Rouge or Roy's in Fascist Island. There's also a new restaurant in the other half of the Roy's building, I can't remember the name right now though. 5 Crowns, Gulfstream or Bandera in CDM...to name a few nicer ones. Your options in Newport, CDM and Balboa are endless really. CDM's full of cute little places if you're looking for something more cozy.
If you want great steak & great seafood go to this little place called La Cave. It is a total dive but I swear it has some of the best food in Newport. Priced very reasonable. The atmosphere is like the Regal Beagle (for some of us who remember that show).
No menu, they roll the menu up to you on a cart and show you what cuts of meat or seafood they havening that night. Great place and interesting atmosphere. Much better then a chain like Joe's Crab Shack.
If La Cave does not sound like your type of dining establishment there is always the Chart House. Mmmmmm crab, mango avocado stack.
Been a while since Ive been there but Garlic Joes is pretty good and a nice mix between snooty and casual.
As for Joes Crab Shack-never been to the one in Newport but the location in Long Beach blows but the location in San Diego is amazing. Go Figure.
Crab Cooker is good but pricey considering they give you paper plates. Their Cheese Potatoes rock though!
I'll second that for Garlic Joe's. Probably the weirdest menu (they can't seem to make up their mind on cuisine) but everything was good. Even the garlic and anchovy pizza. YUMMMM!!!!
Garlic Jo's is worth it if only for their garlic bread. Good sangria too. Steaks are good. Sangria's yummy too. But if you're wanting a "romantic" night...I'd pass on Garlic Jo's. You'll reek of it for a couple days afterwards!

Garlic is an aphrodisiac....especially when paired with a couple bottles of wine and a carefully placed sedative.

Five Crowns and Oysters in CDM. The Quiet Woman can be fun (anyone know why the woman is quiet?)

I am going to La Cave on Saturday. Thanks for the info. I tried to go to Ruth's Chris but it was booked up.
