Default Northern CA Food

For those visiting our friends to the north, or maybe even ones who live in the area, I thought I'd throw out some recommendations for good eats in Sacramento and around the SF Bay.

Just to start, here are few of my regular stops, just off the top of my head:

Delancey Street - 600 Embarcadero St, San Francisco
Fancy restaurant, great food, great atmosphere, great prices. Run by ex-cons and ex-addicts who are getting their lives back together. I've never not liked something I ordered there. For dessert, you have to try the three-ginger gingerbread.

Babs' Delta Diner - 770 Kellogg St, Suisun City
About halfway between SF and Sac, this 50's style diner has the best breakfasts I've ever had. Babs herself is semi-retired but her family keeps the tradition going. They only do breakfast and lunch, closed Mondays, and you might have to wait for a table on the weekends. Try Rod's special, which is homemade corned beef hash topped with two poached eggs and shredded cheddar.

Mikuni Sushi - multiple locations in and around Sacramento
There is a lot of excellent sushi to be found in northern CA (and I'll post a ton more recommendations if people are interested) , but Mikuni is just a lot of fun and even though they're "trendy"-centric, the food is actually really good. Tons of stuff that's not even on the menu too - if you want something, ask for it - they probably have it.

Who else eats in SF, Sac, or somewhere in between?

P.S. I'd also love people who live in or visit other areas in the country or even the world to start threads for food recommendations.

Zachary's Chicago Pizza Inc. in Oakland, Berkeley & San Ramon.

http://www.zacharys.com/

Best Chicago Style Pizza not in Chicago. Can be a long wait, but well worth it. I'd recommend getting a plain cheese pizza or something without meat if you do not like salty food.

Every time I visit Frisco (yes, I did it on purpose), I ALWAYS go to Sam Wo... maybe even two or three times. Great food and crappy service (it is sort of a tradition there).

Great food for cheap.

I have lived in Sac and I'm currently in the bay area... (guppie territory... bleh)
Sac Area
Mikunis is good! Very trendy! Hot people! Good sushi!
If you like Spanish tapas and sangria try Tapa the World. It's downtown.

Bay Area
Zachary's kicks serious butt! I love their pizza!!!!
Right by there is Barney Burger! Mmmmmmmmm!
There is a very small restaurant in the Castro called Tangerine... one of my favs!!!!

San Jose
There is nothing good that comes out of this place. Exactly one year until I take my license and run far far away from this man infested city!

Tadich Grill - 240 California St., SF

One of the oldest restaurants in CA, it's been open since 1849 in various locations around the city. It's an interesting place, but definitely go for lunch and try to get there a little before it opens. There will already be people lining up outside the door. If you're there right away and have a few people in your group, you can get an enclosed booth... otherwise you sit at the counter that ends up having people standing around 3-4 deep waiting for a seat. The waiters are all old guys, and who knows how long they've been there. My dad always gets the cioppino.

Walzwerk - 381 S. Van Ness, SF

East German... yes, I said EAST German restarant. Very small place with tables made out of old industrial desks and such, and pictures of Lenin, Stalin, and Marx on the wall. If you are from an eastern European background, the food will take you back to dinner at your grandmother's house.

The Front Porch - 65a 29th St., SF

Another tiny place, it's like an old bayou house. I tried the dungeness crab corn grit porridge, and it was surprisingly good. Afterward, walk around the corner to Mitchell's and have some avocado ice cream for dessert!

Going to be visiting Rohnert Park/Penngrove area in May to see some family. Already planned a trip to Lagunitas Brewery based on Arrogant Bastards recommendation. Any other good places to go to by there?

I don't know if you/they are into wine, but here are my favorite wineries in the area:

http://www.matanzascreek.com
Best chardonnay I've ever tasted.

http://www.wellingtonvineyards.com/
They have *white* port! They also used to sell grapeseed oil, which is great for cooking. Not sure if they still do or not.

http://www.kunde.com/
You can tour the caves where the wine is stored and aged.

Actually my brother lives up there and when we visit we have to go to Holder's Country Inn for breakfast. Great omelettes that are big and fluffy, and awesome swedish pancakes served on the side of most breakfasts.

There are several locations, but we go to the one off Saratoga.

Wow, I looked it up. Michele's. All the recent online reviews are horrid. I haven't been there since about 1999 so maybe it's gone downhill since.
