About This Page: This is a discussion on Food and Beer Reviews within the LetsGoKings.com forums, at Los Angeles Kings Hockey Fan Forum. This is a pet peeve of mine, I cringe every time I hear a New Yorker say that the can't find good Chinese food here and that it's not authentic.

Seriously? Because I don't think that New York Chinese food is more authentic or better than anything here for that matter.
Just want to get that out.

My parents are from NY and they always say that. I don't know what it is but in 30 years they've only found one place around us that they've liked.
Who knows what it is but my mom always tells me about my grandfather who when in NY would call them up and just ask "You guys want Chink's tonight?" Guess he was little racist.

I think they are referring more to the style. From what I have heard people who talk about NYC Chinese food, they mostly mean the buffet type of place that has a little bit of this and a little bit of that. There is an awesome place by me called "China Buffet" in Torrance on PCH and it is good for the mass quantity type crowd. (I actually ate here the day before my wife went into labor with our son)
The food must just be prepared a bit differently. When I first moved out here the Chinese and the Italian food just weren't the same. Think about the differences you find for the same item at different Mexican restaurants. I don't know if in all these years I have adjusted to the food or what, I have found places that I really like. The pizza is still different but I have adjusted to that.
Here's a good example of the same food tasting different: We've been eating dishes we love from El Pollo Inka for years. Recently, the flavor of the dishes has changed. We assume that the head cook has changed and makes it with different amounts of the spices. I had this happen when an Italian restaurant I used to go to changed their cook. Both times I didn't like the changes.

Some posters around here just like to make up things to suit their personal opinions and then others use them as facts in the future.

Tell them to go to any restaurant along Atlantic Bl. in Monterey Park or Alhambra. Both of those cities are the closest thing to China without actually being there.
I married a New Yorker, and I have to bite my tongue everytime someone in her family mentions how they can't find 'authentic' food in L.A. or anywhere outside of N.Y.
Pizza, Bagels, Chinese Food, Italian Food, etc. There food is good, but as a Californian, I don't think it's above an beyond the food you can find in L.A.

i lived in Monterey Park for over 25 years, have learned through friends to speak a little Cantonese, Mandarin, and some Vietnamese... these friends growing up, had relatives coming over and they used to tell us that maps of the United States IN Hong Kong would always have Monterey Park featured as a major city on them in bold... go to ANY Chinatown in this country and tell them you are from MPK and they'll nod their approval.

They are referring to a style, BUT they usually say "There is no good Chinese Food in Los Angeles. I miss the good, authentic Chinese from New York." instead of "I miss New York Style Chinese food." Then they'll go on and on about how ****ing superior their egg rolls are....yada, yada, yada. I want to tell them to STFU. I've heard it a million times already.
Monterey Park, Alhambra, Rosemead, Chinatown, San Gabriel.
I lived in that general area (Alhambra, Downtown and close enough in Pasadena) for years. Good authentic chinese food that I sorely miss being down here in downtown San Diego.
I need a Sam Woo's down here! lol.
Also, I don't trust a chinese place that has more than a B rating.
