ewwww! i'm going camping between rosarito and ensenada in a week. hope i don't eat one of those!
i just made 3 batches of salsa this past weekend for a contest. i took third. yummy tomato and black bean salsa. if anyone wants the recipe hit me up!
i also love to go to cardenas and get a bunch of carne asada and marinated chicken to bbq. many people like burritos with cheese and sour cream etc, but i love mine nice and simple.....corn tortilla, meat, onions cilantro and some salsa....mmmmmmm
In general terms, Mexican is probably one of my least favorite culinary styles right next to Indian. Probably because we didn't have much mexican food in Hawaii while growing up. My reference was the Taco Hell americanized garbage...which I still like once a year.
I usually only cook carne asada and tamales.
It might sound strange but I like to take my flour tortilla and pan fry it very quickly in a little butter.
I ate more Puerto Rican (family friends) and Peruvian (housekeeper) latin cuisine.
My peruvian housekeepers son had a tamale business up in SJ so i'd get a couple of cases every year when I was in college. He made mexican and peruvian style. My favorite was peruvian style made from white corn filled with chicken with green olives.

I also like making juevos rancheras, burritos, fish tacos, shrimp tacos, Mexican casseroles or bakes, tomatillo salsa, pico de gallo, carne asada fries. I want to try making flautas. I can't make good Mexican rice, don't know why.
i LOVE carne asada fries. my favorite place that makes them is sombreros in san diego. i've had it elsewhere, but it's never been as good. i wish they would open one in orange county.
i would try and be adventurous and try to make them myself, but it sounds like a lot of work without the guarantee i'd do it right--marinating the meat, making the guac and then frying the fries...
my mom always makes turkey enchiladas with the leftovers from thanksgiving.

onions, garlic, salt, pepper, lemon, and a tall-boy... the marinating takes care of itself.

I do meats and burritos and what not but to me barring bbq marinated mexican meats-the best mexican is always either going somewhere for margaritas and a meal or doing one of my favorite local take out places. Albertos and the likes are always pretty dependable and one of my new favorites The Taco Factory in Tustin has pretty good stuff as well. The Taco Factory will be a hit-mainly because its owned by a korean lady who also works the register and takes order but all of the food is handled by latinos.

mmmm.... birria de chivo. You know you're in truly Mexican restaurant or food stall if they have that on the menu. Now I'm gonna have to go to Grand Central Market tomorrow to have some for lunch.

It's only gotten slightly better. Only one or two new places that are decent, and an ok taqueria, but still no sesos, lengua, tripas, etc. That'll be the day. When we first came 7 years ago, it was even more of a wasteland. NOT the place to live for that cuisine.
Aside from basic fish tacos and chorizo con huevos, My GF makes a mean Pork Verde, and Pork Adobo. But her others are more Peruvian, as although Japanese her fathers roots were there for several generations.
