So about 5 months ago they closed the Ralph's that is 3 blocks away for renovation so I was forced to go about 8 blocks to the Von's on the pier. Then about 2 months ago, they closed the Von's for renovation, leaving us with NO LOCAL MARKET within walking distance.
I never realized how important it is to me to be able to take a walk and pick up a few things like a chicken or steak oir milk or whatever. I've been eating out a lot more and eating frozen and canned foods instead of fresh things. I REALLY MISSED MY LOCAL MARKET!!
Well today is the day the new Ralph's opens and I feel like it's Christmas! They have added a fresh bakery and a lot of other things to make it way better than before. I'll probably go by there every day and pick up a few things, I'm so excited!
So anyways, ENJOY your local market because you don't know what you have till it's gone and I really, really missed mine!
How many Starbucks did they put in one store? New grocery stores are great.

You are in Long Beach I presume--you think th e Ralph's is great--wait until that VONs opens up--you will never go back to sky high priced Ralph's--this one I hear will be super special and will open soon! I hear the best perishables in the area and a killer wine selection!!
OK I went by the newly redesigned local Ralph's on 4th and Orizaba today and it was insane. They leveled the old store and rebuilt it from the ground up and it is pristeen.
There was only one parking spot so I swooped on it. When I got into store, the whole thing is mapped out way different from the old boring way. There was a fresh bakery, salad bar, hat foods, deli, meat dept etc. etc. Every section had way more choices than before like 3 or 4 different kinds of chicken instead of just Sandersen and Foster Farms.
They had some beef steaks marked "Angus" that I got a huge t-bone for $6.99 and it was delicious. I could barely maneuver the cart through the store because of the crowd, yet when I went to the register there were 3 or 4 with NOBODY in line.
They had people in each section asking if you need any help and offering samples. The fresh bakery has tons of items and I grabbed some "San Francisco Sourdough" but I swear someone threw some rye seeds in here along with the sourdough. Either way it tastes good.
Another positive was that some of the prices were LOW for the grand opening so I got a huge watermelon cheap and a ton of corn, soup and yogurt dirt cheap. They had Don Francisco Columbian Supremo Whole Beans for $2.99!! I grabbed the limit of two.
Anyways, I'm in hog heaven since the three block walk is real nice and this place is FIRST CLASS. Hopefully they will keep the service and prices up beyond the grand opening!
The local store is the best, especially when someone at Vons who is putting the price stickers on the meat doesn't realize that they put the $1.67/lb price sticker for london broil on the rib eyes that were supposed to be $3.99 or $4.99 lb. Got 3 rib eyes for $5.95 total last Friday.

The Vons in my area is far more overpriced then our Ralphs, plus the quality at Ralphs is a million times better then Vons.

Renovated Ralphs are pretty much the best...unless you like paying 3 bucks extra for everything and then Whole Foods are the best.
We are lucky enough to live right between two Ralph's, one relatively new (and larger) and the other was just renovated.
The thing I'm happy about is that they are starting to get more organic fruits and vegetables and I encouraged at both stores that more is better.
Whole Foods I'd like to blow up, so to speak. We had a Wild Oats which we went to because they had certain things we liked to eat. Since Whole Foods gobbled up Wild Oats by a hostile takeover (from what I heard) they have discontinued most of those items. I think the prices went up, too, but I don't want to go there anymore if they don't carry what I want so I'm not sure.
