I went to CBS Seafood Restaurant in Chinatown for lunch today and it was delicious. A couple of orders of pork shu mai and a couple of orders of shrimp balls and some pork bun and sesame balls with bean curd, oh and some fish balls. All that stuff for $15 bucks. Ridiculous.
The places in the San Gabriel Valley (where most of the nearly half million local Chinese actually live) usually put the Chinatown places to shame. For me, Ocean Star in Monterey Park is consistently good if you like the cart method (888 in Rosemead & NBC in Monterey Park are also good, but can be hit or miss at times), while Seafood Harbour in Rosemead has the best dim sum around, but is a bit pricier and does not have carts (Mission 261 in San Gabriel, Elite in Monterey Park and Triumphal Palace in Alhambra also go into this category). After my first time to Seafood Harbour a few years ago, there was a buzz as we were leaving the building--it turned out to be Jackie Chan & Michelle Yeoh entering by the back door to a private dining area.
I hear there are some other good places further east in Rowland Heights, but I've never personally ventured that far.
With so many Chinese in the area, there is all sorts of great authentic dining variety from the various regions of China, and most of it is not only pretty damn good, but quite cheap, too. Go.
Sam Woo in Roland is acceptable. We usually go to Sea Food Palace which is also hit or miss in Roland. There is a place off of Nogales in Roland right before Colima on the west side of the street that is very good. I forgot the name of it but the have some of the best Ha Gao I have ever had.
Also don't try and go on Sunday for dim sum if you do go early and beat the church crowd.

My chinese ex GF's family use to eat at a place in a mall in this area-dont remember the name but it was a stones throw away from Sam Woo.
In OC-Seafood Palace is very good but obviously all dishes are seafood so they dont have the pork dish. Theres another place on Garden Grove and Magnolia thats very good as well-sorry I dont know the name.

Ohh there is Seafood i think Star in the 99 ranch market shopping center. If I recall it was excellent. The have all dim sum flavors too, pork included.
my friends and i have been doing yum cha at SeaWorld on San Gabriel and Garvey in Rosemead for almost 15-years now, and it has never disappointed me.... the service is excruciatingly horrible, though. but it's so Hong Kong that i love it!

I have to concur with all the Ocean Star recommendations in this thread. My ex-wife is Chineese and from the SGV. When we were together we would go there. Absolutely phenomenal food (not just the Dim Sum).
Speaking of asian food can anyone recommend a good Korean BBQ buffet place? There's a nice place in Alhambra near the movie theatre named Dim Sum. I think it's off Main Street.

Thanks SirJW, i've only been to Pearl Chinese Cuisine down here so far. I lived in Alhambra, Pasadena and Downtown LA before moving down to SD so the "Little Peking" area was a regular stop for me.
There's just a dearth of good authentic chinese it seems to me unless I hit a nicer sit-down restaurant. I miss Sam Woo's BBQ and some of the Cafe's back in LA.
theres this tiny little shack called Dim Sum Express at 326 N Garfield Ave, Monterey Park. its a fast food take on dim sum. some might consider it heresy if i said it competes with the big boys like NBC, but i dont know, i think it comes very close. its delicious, its cheap, and i love how you dont have to sit down and deal with the whole restaurant thing. you can just arrive and grab a couple har gow and a turnip cake for less than $3. i like
