Not yet, although it's about the same distance from my house.

It seems that the Glendora location is a bit larger, in both overall size and beer selection. Rancho has a couple things that Glendora doesn't, and Glendora has a couple things that Rancho doesn't. So yeah. I continue to visit both and Liqourama.

Question for you fellow beer fans -

For those of you that are into Double IPAs, did you acquire a taste for them, or did you enjoy them from the get go?

The super hoppy taste isn't really my thing... but then, beer wasn't my thing at all a few years ago, and now I love lots of it...

How/when did you get into IPAs?

For me it was acquired over time. I started with the usual American brews, the started trying some imports. It helped that there were a couple of liguor stores nearby that had a good selection of true imports and not just Americanized versions with the same name. The next step was about 20-25 years ago, when I joined a beer of the month club, and started sampling beers from around the U.S. IPas would sometimes be in the mix, so developed a taste. But I like a lot of different beers, it depends on my mood, and the weather.

My story is similar to that of DougW8's. When I was age 14-17 years old, we use to drink Bud, Coors, MGD - whatever we could get our hands on because back then you'd take what you could get and wouldn't complain (although we'd still rag on Coors Light, heh). Your commercial imports like Heineken, Molson, Becks, New Castle and various others helped mature the taste buds a bit when I reached my later teen years. Then from there, I realized that it's pointless sticking to one beer and one beer only (and honestly I still cannot find the one and only beer up to this very day). I really began wanting to try new brews whenever I could, working my way up from beers not so hard on the palate but certainly more challenging than a New Castle (Firestone Double Barrel for example). Once Arrogant Bastard & BeerMan recommended an Arrogant Bastard Ale I was IMMEDIATELY hooked on beers hopped up like a mother ! Likewise, working my way up to Double IPAs was certainly not a problem as I wanted to experience the next level of intensity on the palate. I knew I was going to enjoy what I was about to try, because several great people here know their beer and never dissapoint when it comes to their input. There is a lot of sentimental value for me when it comes to drinking beer.

Hops have never been a turn off or took lots of getting adjusted to. However, stouts took some time to sit well with me. I am really beginning to enjoy several of them right now (the Stone Imperial Russian Stout is fantastic). Go back in my shoes 5 years ago from today, and I would probably tell you the exact opposite - how dark, heavy, thick, and disgusting it is !

Overall for me, it was a transition into heaviness, not so much hoppiness. Its different for everybody though.

You might try some lightly hopped IPAs (like Sierra Nevada IPA or the Alaskan IPA) to work your way up to some of the hoppier IPAs like the Stone IPA.

Absolutely. Mood, weather, setting, situation, etc. are all very important factors of enjoying a beer.

By the way, congrats on your 5,000th post !

I started out drinking Newcastle and quickly found that I preferred IPAs. MMMMM.....here is what I drink:

Coronas...yes i said Corona! So good on a summer day. They're not too heavy and you can drink them all day.

Been to a lot of Phish shows....my choice lot beers are:
Bass
Sierra Nevada Pale Ale
Sammy Smith Nut Brown Ale (big size, bought from some dreddie hippie kid pulling an ice chest on a skateboard)
Fat Tire
After a few of the above almost any dark beer will do!

Never been a fan of Bud. I've actually said 'no thanks' at a kegger - and i LOVE beer!

CHEERS!

Shows how much I pay attention to such things, I didn't even notice. I guess I should celebrate.

Ok, I think that's enough. By the way Az, if you haven't already, make sure to try Shakespeare Stout. I still think it's one of the best stouts made.

Ha! I was just going to suggest Shakespeare. If you can get it on tap... awesome.

I would say you just have to work your way up to stronger beers, as with anything.

For me, it's how I was brought up, and having major collectors in my family I get the benefit of sampling incredible things that I would never ever get to otherwise.

Thanks for the input, this has been a fun thread.

I only bring up the IPA because I tried Stone IPA VERY early on in my beer tasting, and was overwhelmed by it. Tried a MAXIMUS IPA today, and I still don't quite have the taste for it. I can drink it, but it just doesn't do it for me.

Some "softer" Pale Ales I have enjoyed... I do like the Sierra Nevada brew and one of my favorite beers to date is the Ballast Point Yellowtail Pale Ale. I just enjoy a smooth finish without too much aftertaste; those strong IPAs kick, and hard.

If I drink beer at all i'll get a Bass Pale Ale if it's available.
That is my second choice to a Kirin Ichiban though.
If i'm at a brewery i'll try one of the lighter house beers.

I did try a Speckled Hen and a Smithwick's at my local pub.

Try the IPA from Marin Brewing Company. It is pretty mild for an IPA and a great introductory one at that. They carry it at BevMo.

I need to pick up some IPA's when I go to BevMo Friday. Love them during the summer.
