Iran is far closer to a democracy than most think. That is something the clowns in the US govt fail to tell us when they whine about Iran. It certainly is much closer than many of our friends in, like you say, in Pakistan or Saudi Arabia. Of course, SA doesn't have nukes but Pakistan does...which IMO, makes it one of the most dangerous places in the world now.
I don't know why when the subject of our support of Israel gets brought up the suggestion of "stopping support" is always raised. The problem I've had with our relationship is the fact it's almost never DEBATED. It's almost always a "full support no matter what" kind of thing. Hell, the presidential candidates have to say that just to get elected. Do we ever hear a debate whether we are doing the right things to get Israel to do certain things? No, because when you often get labeled anti-semitic (like Jimmy Carter has). The presidential debates have all kinds of arguments back and forth on the war in Iraq or abortion. These discussions are freely debated. But the support of Israel? Never...on either side of the aisle...it's the same old "full support no matter what".
I certainly don't see any problem with supporting Israel as long as we can freely tell them to "no" on some things or "kiss our ass" occasionally. How about pulling back on some of our financial support if they don't bend in some of their policies (like the occupation of the West Bank)? Look, I'm totally behind supporting the Israeli's as long as we can discuss freely here in this country what is best of the USA in this relationship....not just bending over backwards on anything the Israeli's want.
