The FX 5200s may have a problem running at 1920x1280. Some of the linux reviews I read stated that there were display issues like what you are describing under linux with the FX 5200s.
Did that...and that...and that...

I was thinking that very thing about the FX5200. Perhaps its time to upgrade the wife's vid card? Shouldn't be too expensive to head to Fry's and find a replacement AGP card.
